FYI, here's the Gentoo bug we opened 3 years ago to track it down:

The biggest hurdle was the variance of situations depending on the
projects. For instance, firefox/gecko was #including pangox.h without
using any of its symbols. Others still really use the old API and we
pretty much gave up on trying to fix it everywhere :)

I, for one, am really glad to see this finally being done.
