It also makes it much easier for us to override some of the settings in a configurable way. (We already managed to, but the scripts were not what I would call elegant.) The commit log mentions that a single setting in g-s-d to disable all “unsafe” plugins would be much better, which is just what I was about to suggest after discussing the issue today.
