Are you aware about several sets of patches created for small screen
devices? I am not sure, whether they can be upstreamed, but you should
consider existence of small screen devices and mouse-less devices (with
stylus or no pointing device).

Secondly, file chooser (and even HIG guidelines) hardwires fixed pixel
count spacing. It's ugly and bad practice:

Looking at the GtkFileChooser source code, it's full of such spacing.
