How to label a line with text?

I have done this before, in fact I have diagrams with simple lines showing text labels.
But I can't for the life of me figure out how to do it again.
I have tried F2 and Enter and all the menu items. Text does not appear in the Properties page.
How can I do this? It must be easy.
