Bethany, That is the only idea I have. Somebody will have a better idea. 

Since it is clearly not desired behavior.  If this is a new installation, you might just try to uninstall and reinstall.  Sorry, I have no more unwisdom.

HI Michael and thanks for your reply.  The only layer in my diagram is the background.   See attached screenshot.  

I did try adding a new layer and then adding an object on that layer to see if that would help.  I cannot delete the object itself on the new layer but can delete the layer itself, which in turn deletes the object.

I would guess a layering problem.  Press ctrl-L to get the layer dialog.  You must highlight the layer of the item you wish to edit.  If the wrong layer is current, you cannot get to it.

Open dia
Select rectangle tool
Draw a rectangle on the diagram
Select the rectangle using the select tool
Press delete OR edit-> delete

Behavior:
Object does not delete

Object is deleted
