Ah, ah, Here it is! I wasn't able to find any button to switch on the layer control. Thank you a lot.

In the layer control (ctrl-L) if you pick where the eye icon is, it disappears and so does the corresponding layer. But if you click back where the eye was, it comes back on and the layer is again visible.
