So far, my best bet is to use GTK and dia-lib. Is is a good idea ? Is it possible to use dia-lib ?
Have you considered the use of a simple Dia plugin and/or some specialized sheets/shapes?

Here are some advantages:

* Easier/faster to develop
* Easier to maintain, because you just plug into the latest Dia release (In case your code makes it into Dia, you'll just have to maintain your code and you'll get the Linux/Mac OS X/Windows builds for free. Don't underestimate the packaging overhead. For a small project (like yours sounds from the initial description) this overhead might be a substantial part of the overall effort
* Possibility to reach a broader audience
* Plugin interfaces might be more reliable/stable than simply linking against the (internal) dia-lib

Steffen
