That was a good idea. You're right, inserting SVG images into diagrams (and thus the Gradient shapes) currently don't work with the Mac OS X. Sorry for this. I've filed a bug report for it:

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=669140

It's not a problem of Dia, it's an underlying library lacking SVG support in this Mac build.
