Shouldn't it be enabled by default?

If you can no longer find any bugs in it maybe,
but it has been unstable in the past.

It has been a version or two since it was unstable.

Are the bugs reported?
Are them fixed?
Do you know how to reproduce them?

Real problem is that it's significantly slower,

It's a default. People would still be able to chose non antialiased

As a rule things should be faster by default.

Users that decide Dia is too slow are less likely to put up with it than
users who want that extra polish of having anti-aliased on.

Dia should definately continue to put functionality before aesthetics.
