much, try using xfontsel or gtkfontsel to get a font that works.


From gtkfontsel, I selected a fontname.  This file is also
attached. However, I still got:

Do you have the fonts installed locally, or do you use a (remote) font
server?  If all your fonts are remote, or the directories lists in the font
directory part of fonts.conf don't contain usable fonts (and fonts.dir
entries), Pango can't find fonts.

Can you run other programs using Pango?  For instance, PAPS (a postscript
generator example) is a good simple test.
