adding shapes: fill and stroke not honored?

I was trying to add a filled circle to
my available shapes using an SVG circle.

As far as I can tell, Dia does not honor
the fill and stroke attributes?

Worse, if I create an SVG circle, Dia
refuses to fill it.  (I.e., if I try
double clicking the object and setting
the fill color, nothing happens.)

I would very much like to use the fill
and stroke attributes.  Is this an 
oversight or a postponement?
