You know, for Java it should really be easy to make AutoDia in Java.
Java can read its classfiles itself, and has good XML support.  The only
thing necessary is the layout, then.  Not that I have the time to do it,

Do you mean that one should begin from scratch with a Java version or is
it worth to use some (which?) parts of the existing Unix/Perl/c version?

I haven't delved enough into the Perl version to see what would be useful.
It is neither C nor Unix, though.
