PS: another problem comes to my mind: according to Dia's license, as I'm
hacking on simple shapes, shapes in a plug-in, and now additional
features, do I have to share my work? I do this for a company, which
seems to be OK if the source code is opened, but asks for written
permission for its use and redistribution...

You and your company must either comply with the GPL or not use this
software at all; you have the choice. You'll probably want to solve this
problem of choice before you even begin to solve the linker and compiler
issues.

Certainly if you change Dia, you must either not redistribute it or send
out the source along with it. Plug-ins I'm not so sure about, shapes are
probably not covered. But IANAL.
