autoconf: 2.53

OK

automake: 1.5

This is unsupported. This version broke a lot of features, and for that
reason by default Debian sid (used by the maintainers) includes only 1.4.
I (personally) expect to jump straight to 1.6 when I see a compelling reason
or APT brings me there (whichever happens first).

libtool: 1.3.4-freebsd-ports

1.4.2 here.

intltool: 0.22
ditto here

gettext: 0.11.1

This seemed to have caused problems too. You may want to revert to gettext
0.10.40

first some interesting non fatal error from running autogen.sh:

There is a mismatch between gettext's makefiles and intltool's patch on
gettext's makefiles.

But then I finally run `make' and get this stopper:

$ make
make all-recursive
Making all in m4
Making all in lib
"Makefile", line 376: Could not find .deps/arrows.Po
"Makefile", line 377: Could not find .deps/attributes.Po
"Makefile", line 378: Could not find .deps/bezier_conn.Po
"Makefile", line 379: Could not find .deps/beziershape.Po
......
make: fatal errors encountered -- cannot continue
*** Error code 1

This is libtool failing somewhere.

Any hints?

Can you try to run with the configure scripts and makefiles from the
snapshots ?
