Ubuntu 12.04 uses Unity by default, which is Compiz; when you say
"GNOME" what environment do you mean? Unity, GNOME 2.x, or GNOME
Shell?

you should ask in gtk-list, not in desktop-devel-list; alternatively,
open a bug on Launchpad.
