For this last point in particular, there is code and discussion
happening in the years old
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=613543 , and my opinion is
that the media-keys plugin is legacy and should be replaced with an
integrated solution.
IMHO, environments that are still using g-s-d, or that considering
light-forking it (like AFAUI Unity), should take the code before it is
dropped and turn it into a downstream patch.
