I recommend you to follow the instructions for building from
http://live.gnome.org/GnomeShell 

The shell script linked
http://git.gnome.org/browse/gnome-shell/plain/tools/build/gnome-shell-build-setup.sh
doesn't build mozilla-xulrunner from code, it installs a package instead

it installs mozilla-xulrunner191 for opensuse, but the current ubuntu
xulrunner-dev version seems to be 1.9.2.10
