I'm aware of the differences but it seems to be a regression when we
need two files to do the same thing where previously one was enough. I
have a strong feeling this is a temporary situation but can't find the
discussion to confirm this.

I agree with both of the above...

...that's why I posted this to desktop-devel - I was hoping there is a
plan somewhere (be it here, bugzilla or live.gnome.org) that is just
hard to find :)
