I'd like to:

1) Mention that the tiff and jpeg loaders in 2.12 gdk-pixbuf now set the "orientation" option associated with the pixbuf based on the embedded tiff/exif orientation tag, so that client programs can orient the image correctly.

2) Plead for review of the related patches in these bugs:

439567 – Add functions to transform pixbufs based on orientation tags
440978 – respect orientation tag when generating thumbnails

so that the next versions of gnome/nautilus/gtk/gthumb all agree on how to orient thumbnails. It's a conflicting mess right now.
