Time I don't think as interesting as "Is it easier to debug than auto*"?
So we have a hope of new contributors not being totally lost when the
chain of makefiles generating shell scripts generating makefiles
generating shell scripts has some error somewhere.

I'm leaning towards yes - I'd take a Python traceback over that any day.
