SCIM, Emacs, and Gnome

It has been reported that Emacs cannot accept X input methods, such as
SCIM, when gnome-settings-daemon is running. All versions of Emacs
are affected, including the current released Emacs version 21 and the
unreleased Emacs version 22.

When I log into a "failsafe terminal" session from GDM, and launch
gnome-panel, Emacs, metacity, and SCIM manually, SCIM Chinese input is
accepted by Emacs without any problem. Others have reported that X
input methods work fine with Emacs on other desktop environments.

In a full Gnome session, keystrokes seem to be passed directly to
Emacs instead of through SCIM, as though SCIM were not running.
According to various bug reporters, this happens with version 2.12 or
later of gnome-settings-daemon and a *.UTF-8 locale (zh_CN.GB2312 and
zh_CN.GBK locales, for example, work fine).

A bugzilla entry has been created, but not been replied to:

  http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=357032

Any information or speculation on why this happens, or directions to a
more appropriate mailing list, would be much appreciated.

Thanks.
