At the moment the only ones I can find are created for KDE, I guess
because GNOME doesn't really support them. They're often surprisingly
professional.
Right now non-hardware sound mixing is only just becoming reliable enough
that ambient sounds work well - I don't know about you guys but I normally
listen to music whilst working which makes notification/usability noises
pretty pointless unless dmix or a sound server is active. Updating the
default sounds or supporting sound/voice themes as described here:

... would make a nice demonstration of how to use the high level GStreamer
APIs.
