Thanks to Mr. Adams and Mr. Tredinnick for the tips about the
.metacity/sessions/ directory and the XML there.

In an environment where metacity session saving seems to work better,
does anyone have an example of a <window> entry for displaying an
application on a second monitor?

With some examples, I can run some experiments to see if the problems
I am seeing are in the creation of the tags or also in the reading and
implementing the tags.

Also, with regards to the session ids - it's my understanding, reading
the docs, that these are 'idiot' numbers, and as long as one doesn't
use the same id for two different processes, that one can use any
arbitrary random sequence.  Is that completely true, or are there
rules one who is forced to hand edit these files needs to keep in mind?
