windoze makes that differentiation at the visual level. icons that
represent categories have the appearance of a regular folder in its
background.
nautilus can tell you the item is a folder by saying that it has N items
inside of it, but again you are able to turn off that option...
perhaps this is some sort of visual ambiguity problem.
