Yeah, presumably the fonts should be packaged somehow nice, with a
tarball and have a configure --prefix=/usr and install to
$(datadir)/fonts or something.

It will suck completely - it breaks i18n among other things because
Vera isn't suitable for all languages. But also it means gnome apps
and other apps don't have the same default font.
The default font is "sans-serif" period, and always will be. If
people want default sans font to be Vera, they need to configure
fontconfig as such. fontconfig could come that way out of the box,
that might be nice.
