The OpenI18N 1.2 compliant gettext support was first introcduced
in Solaris 9, so vanilla Solaris 8 does not have Plurals/ngettext
support. But there are packport of OpenI18N 1.2 compliant gettext
support released as patches.
SPARC: 108827-34 (for libc) and 113415-01 (for commands)
x86: 108828-35 (for libc) and ?????? (for commands)
So with these patches, Solaris 8 is also OK with the use of this
feature.
There is no backport as far as I know of for Solaris 7 or the earlier
versions.
