Hi,
I'm working on a patch to add epiphany to gnome-mime-data but I'm
blocked by this issue:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=117661
Basically freedesktop spec would require something like this in the
.desktop:
Name=Epiphany
GenericName=Web Browser
This would result in an "Epiphany" label in the menu.
GenericName is currently ignored (I think).
The HIG suggests:
1 If your application's proper name is already descriptive of its
functionality, and not just suggestive, use the format: Application Name
2 If there is a succinct functional description of your application, use
the format: ApplicationName FunctionalDescription
Dave is willing to consider Epiphany a code the name, while the real
application name should be functional. This would fall in case 1, and
should be implemented like:
Name = Web Browser
GenericName= Web Browser
If we consider Epiphany the application name, the implementation would
be
Name = Epiphany Web Browser
GenericName = Web Browser
Personally while I think using functional names for applications is
positive, with so many browsers available (and distributions that ship
more than one), it could create problems. So I'm unsure ...
Opinions ?
Marco
