I think listen is the same as view (- maybe a wording change) since
you're not modifying the file. Maybe for sound files, a synthesizer can
be the 'edit'or and a player can be the 'viewer'. We'll probably need
the 'View' string to be overridable for file types for which 'View' does
not make much sense (.e. sound files)

Not really - I think you underestimate the end user. Anyone slightly
familiar with the desktop metaphor can distinguish between files and
directories. So, having two options 'Open files in seperate window' and
'Open directories in seperate window' makes good sense IMO.
