I don't know how it deals with stuff there.
If, for example, this happens:
$ ls ~/.themes/TigertCrack/metacity-1/
ChangeLog  maximize.png   metacity-theme-1.xml
close.png  maximized.png  minimize.png
$

If you have root on the box I'd try throwing the themes in
/usr/share/themes/ thoguh.
