You can show the tooltip for any focused control by pressing Ctrl+F1.
Tooltips will continue to be shown for focused controls in that window
until you press Ctrl+F1 again.
(Actually I thought the Ctrl+F1 toggle worked desktop-wide rather than
per-window, but unfortunately it appears not to).
