There's no need for a term; it's just an implementation detail. Try to
find any term for this on any other operating system. No one cares
that a process exists that provides window frames.
It's definitely confusing to new users. They don't know what a WM is,
why they would want to change it, and in fact even if they knew those
things they would not be interested in changing the WM because there
is no real point in doing so. It's something that should Just Work.

While on this subject, how's things going with metatheme? I have to admit that for the novice linux user it is confusing as hell that he can choose a 'desktop interface' (kde/gnome), and a window manager, and then has the select a theme for the 'buttons and content of the windows' and the 'frames around the windows'.. this doesnt make any sence from a users perspective, and is a abstrocity born from the mind of technical people.

From what i recollect, metatheme was supposed to solve most of these problems (if a user chooses not to use a theme pack, its his good right, but we shouldnt make it required for a novice). So how about making a 'Configure desktop look' capplet that selects metathemes, and 'advanced desktop options' where one can select gtk themes, window manager themes, etc... in these 'advanced options' it would be ok to call it a gtk theme or a windowmanager theme to, since the user already choose to get 'advanced terminologies and options'.

So whadayasay? A metatheme default look configuration?
