Heh. Okay... Bear with me for a moment:

  You can have the 1.4.1 and 2.x developer platforms installed side-by-side.

  You can have the 1.4.1 desktop and applications, and the 2.x developer
  platform and applications installed side-by-side.

  You cannot have the 1.4.1 desktop and and the 2.x desktop installed
  side-by-side. The 2.x desktop *replaces* the 1.4.1 desktop (which, in this
  example, precludes the gnomecc binaries being installed side-by-side).

Whilst this sounds complicated, it's pretty straight forward for users. You
can install the 2.x desktop or not. :-)
