Hi Deepa,
I don't believe there exists overall versioning in Gnome to the fine level
of granularity that you expect. This is because a user can have any mix of
component versions in their Gnome desktop so long as the dependencies are
satisfied.
I think it would be useful if there were an agreed and optional file
which contained an overall release string. This file could be inserted
at build time, and the level and scope of the version therein would only
be meaningful with respect to that distribution of that build. The string
could be as Generic as "Gnome 2" or "Beta" or as fine as "Gnome 2.0.1 beta".
Of course, any distrubution can put in such a file independently, but
having a common location means it could be displayed, if present, in
About GNOME or superimposed on the splashcreen.
