The root cause of the problem you are all having is probably that your
X server reports the wrong dpi. Recent versions of X normally do a
pretty good job getting this right, but if yours doesn't you might try
setting the DisplaySize field in XF86Config. (see "man XF86Config")

To check your actual DPI, measure the monitor with a ruler to get
number of inches, run "xdpyinfo" to get resolution in pixels, 
then do the division. "xdpyinfo" will also report the DPI X thinks you
have.
