I don't know about opening it another window... I think that would just
get confusing. But there's certainly no need for the list to appear
until the search has started, so that would be an easy way to make
the dialog look less intimidating.
The whole "additional options" part of the dialog is still a bit
confusing though, but at least that's hidden by default :)
 Unless it persistently remembered the last search you did, along
with its results... which would be really cool, but probably a lot
harder to implement than it sounds :)
