I don't know about opening it another window... I think that would just
get confusing. But there's certainly no need for the list to appear
until the search has started[1], so that would be an easy way to make
the dialog look less intimidating.
The whole "additional options" part of the dialog is still a bit
confusing though, but at least that's hidden by default :)

[1] Unless it persistently remembered the last search you did, along
with its results... which would be really cool, but probably a lot
harder to implement than it sounds :)
