Does this mean I will not be able to use it? Is gnome going through a
'backwards compatibility crisis'?
What about creating a symlink or something between the pkginfo script and
the gnome-conf script?

gnomeConf.sh is part of gnome-config script. gnome-config script has
been deprecated in GNOME2 in favour of pkg-config. The software you try
to compile apparently has not been ported to GNOME2.
