There is a lot about application launch feedback that is currently
planned, including a busy cursor and some other goodies. I recently read
some text about it and it was very nice. There is also an application
called "xalf" which can already do this, it was used in Gnome 1.4 so you
can be sure the functionality will be back (just better).

This was or still issed discussed on (I think) the Nautilus mailinglist
so I guess it will be possible someday.

But this is exactly what it dose for me? Not sure why it doesn't for
you.

This might indeed be handy... Not sure what the latest thoughts about
this are.

This works very well with latest Metacity (2.4).

Metacity also never allows your windows to get lost behind panels. :)

Seeing how stable and powerfull Metacity already is, maybe it could
already replace Sawfish as a default in 2.0.x? Distributors seem to
prefer Metacity anyway.
