I think I do this all the time; I use an Ascend box which is always live
but isn't always connected to the WAN (because that costs $$).  So a lot
of the time I am connected physically but not net-wise.  Sometimes it's
better to turn the network off when I'm doing this, to keep from having
to endure long timeouts.
