We probably do need some sort of general "event service" daemon, that
would handle gconf notifies, maybe the FAM stuff, and other kinds of
events.

If we did that we could drop gconfd entirely, probably, and get rid of
the FAM systemwide service as well.

A very long term project. ;-)
