Really appreciate the prompt and helpful replies from Mathew Nicholson and Alex. It's not only helpful for using Beagle, but also for using Linux, as I've only been with it for a few months, and have only used distro-packages basically.

I went ahead and used the 'apt-get build-dep' command. Did it from /usr/lib, the directory in which the beagle source seems to be located. I don't know whether the directory you're in tells  apt-get where to install it, or whether it just does 'what's right' for the downloaded packages. I don't know whether Beagle is aware of the newly downloaded files.

Alex suggested the 'source' option to get the latest Beagle version. And the man pages say that you can even tell it which version to fetch. But I'm afraid I don't know what ' re-use the debian folder for the 0.2.8
 source packag' means. Does it mean that I should run the command from /usr/lib, where the Beagle source code resides? I'm not sure what I would do once this command was run. 
Alex also kindly offered his own files. I really appreciate this, but I'd rather learn how to go about getting the necessary files myself, as you did. If you guys can, some pointers on this process would be welcome.

How should I go about upgrading to 0.2.8 without damagin my current install?

Hello.

Running Ubuntu Dapper.

The beagle project home page has a detailed list of dependencies to be
insalled.

Some of them, such as mono-web, mono-data and mono-data-sqlite, I have a
hard time finding, either in the Ubuntu repositories or on the net.

Does the distro package take care of that?
Do I have to have all of the above packages?
If I do, is it OK to compile them after the package install? Have to let
beagle know that new files were installed?

I haven't looked at the dependencies of 0.2.8 to hard, but, since your
on dapper, a:

sudo apt-get build-dep beagle

should get you most of what you need. that will get all the build
dependencies of the version in dapper ( 0.2.6) which should at least be a
good start for 0.2.8
