sqlite hates me

i'm using gentoo, and everything works fine until i want to compile
beagle (using latest cvs). I have all the dependencies installed (double
and triple checked sqlite) and it still gives me this error:

configure: error: Package requirements (sqlite) were not met.
Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you
installed software in a non-standard prefix.

Alternatively you may set the SQLITE_CFLAGS and SQLITE_LIBS environment
variables
to avoid the need to call pkg-config.  See the pkg-config man page for
more details.


What can i do???
