In answer to Nat's IRC questions:

No, it doesn't time out.  Or at least after 10 minutes.

I'm using Evolution 1.4.3 patched with the frontend and backend patches
from Dashboard CVS.

I'll have a go from C, and see what happens, as you suggested.
