[gtk/matthiasc/for-master: 5/8] Refactor gtk_widget_pick

commit 392b9038a74d31cde9e5c8dba595b175f8a6072d
Author: Matthias Clasen <mclasen redhat com>
Date: Sun Jan 19 00:41:45 2020 -0500

Split this into a recursive part and a public
entry point. This lets us avoid some duplicate
    checks.
