Log:
The user doesn't like seeing nothing, so if the user manages to select none of the categories, just show all the results.
This caused another good thing: no more category_is_being_shown and category_was_being_shown! (They were misleading names too now that I think about it)
We've now chucked out category_is_being_shown, and we replaced category_was_being_shown with categories_being_shown which returns the number of categories being shown. If we were showing no categories, and the user checked something, we'll be showing one now.
