This could be related to a bug about image previews:

or maybe a bug about blank screens (if there is no 3D acceleration, 
reauired for the Clutter surface that Cheese uses):

It could be either of those problems, but the ffmpeg error seems to 
suggest that it is something new. Please file a new bug.
