I think it does right now, but this is more of a hack than anything
else, and I would not depend on this for real data.
In the Evolution calendar (the next version of gnome-cal) we have
changed the design: there is a server process that "controls" the
calendar file, and you can have multiple clients talking to it (so
that changes are propagated correctly).
