wodim is known for schreddering DVD DL media because it never retrieves media 
information and thus does not know about the medium.

I am not sure what you mean but you definitely should not use wodim/cdrkit
as it is broken. Use the original software and make sure that you are not 
a victim of the symlinks that provide the names of the original software but 
point to the broken fork.

cdrecord (the original software) does this automatically.
