Hi,
Since the problem also happens with Totem, I'd suggest you file a bug
with GStreamer:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=GStreamer
It's is the common multimedia playback library used by both Banshee and Totem.

I copied the video off a music cd - it was one of those freebies on the
music cd contained on a data partition.

I've tried playing it in totem but I just see this:
Since it won't play in totem, it's probably something to do with a common
library. Here's all the output that I managed to get from totem, just this
line repeated:
