Hi,

1. What is the extention of your file?

Banshee use Gstreamer as backend. Gstreamer play a lot of music format.

You just need to install it.

You have 3 package ugly, bad and good.

You need to install them if you want some extra format.

Else you have soundConverter to translate...

2. IIRC, Banshee can save your CDs as MP3 or other format you have specified in option.
