This sounds similar to an issue that was fixed in Banshee 1.6.1: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=548635

Which version of Banshee are you using? If you're having this problem in a version newer than 1.8, please report a bug, because I don't think this is the intended behavior. http://banshee.fm/contribute/file-bugs/
